Definition and Terminology

●Exempt Accommodation – accommodation provided by a RP, or voluntary/charitable organisartion, where care, support or supervision is provided directly by, or on behalf of the landlord ●Specified Accommodation – where care, support of supervision is provided by a third party where commissioned by the Authority, which therefore does not fit within the exempt accommodation definition ●Supported Housing – inclusive of all exempt and specified accommodation. It is of note that Supported Housing is a generic, rather than a technically defined term. It can apply to various property types, including women’s’ refuges, drug & alcohol rehabilitation, homeless shelters and some elderly accommodation etc. as well as dwellings that accommodate people with Learning Disabilities, Physical Disabilities or Mental Health problems etc. ●Specialised Supported Housing oNo or negligible public funding (social housing/LA grant) oHigh level of support and developed in conjunction with the LA/Health strategic priorities oWhere the alternative accommodation would be care homes or other institutionalised settings ●Registered Providers (RP) oRP’s of social housing are regulated by the Homes and Communities Agency (RSH) ●RSH oGovernment regulator of RP’s oApplicator of Rent Standards – net rent must be based on formula rent and must be affordable. N.B. SSH is exempt from the Rent Standards N.B. Specialised Supported Housing tenancies account for only c. 10,000 of a total of c. 400,000 supported housing tenancies across the UK.
